Transformation

A unique component of the Interior design programme at DIT is the opportunity offered to students to support their major project in one area of specialism with a secondary project from a related design discipline.

To complement her major Interior design project, which is the creation of a multi-storey Beauty training Academy, Dominka Walus has elected to design and produce a range of furniture pieces under the theme of ‘Transformation’. Utilising her own workshop experience and skills acquired in year 2 and 3, Dominika has gone back to first principles to develop a collection of screen and shelf objects for the public spaces within her academy. Working primarily in wood to translate her ‘duckling into swan’ concept into functional forms, she has developed a design language where beauty is expressed through an exploration and celebration of perceived ‘imperfections’ within her chosen materials.

Through a dialogue between the materials themselves, the structural requirements of the pieces and of forms appropriate to the concept, Dominika has developed forms which are at once simple and functional whilst also presenting an entirely appropriate visual metaphor. Through carefully considered addition of colour to further highlight and compliment naturally occurring details, beauty is exposed and developed through a celebration of difference and complexity through acknowledging imperfection and eschewing bland uniformity.
