Loitering
‘Loitering’ is a series of tableaux photographs which represent the everyday lives of young people living in an average rural town in Ireland. The images attempt to capture the spirit of the ‘Lost Generation’, many young people are faced with a lack of opportunities in rural areas. In contrast to the city, youth culture in rural Ireland relies on creativity and innovation; an ability to adapt to the environment. In one example, a farm building is upcycled as a private club. Boredom and lack of activities can lead to alcohol and substance abuse, in another image a disused railway leads to a safe place for drinking cans, an attempt to escape from their otherwise mundane surroundings. While others lucky enough to have access to a car spend their days listening to music and loitering around town.
