Beryl Is Back!

The objective of this brief was to redesign classic comic character Beryl the Peril to suit a new era and the Beano's new ethos of fun, imagination and inclusivity. Key to this is including more female characters in the current Beano lineup. In order to create strong and empowering representation, I have incorporated an independent and fighting spirit into the 'new' Beryl. Beryl readily questions the rules, breaking them, not out of spite, but due to how restrictive she finds them. Beryl's approach to rules and societal norms apply outside of herself too; at any given time she's ready to fight for others. In creating a fierce and free spirit in Beryl, my hope is that readers of all identities will learn independence and the importance of supporting one another, especially those in less favourable positions. This project includes a new design for Beryl, her room and an example of a pitched comic strip.
