Project 1: Invisible Cities

One of the ISTD brief was this year the Invisible Cities by Italo Calvino. This is an editorial project.

The original book is about a conversation between the ruler of the 13th century Mongolian Empire, Kublai Khan, and his adventurer and advisor Marco Polo. Each city has its atmosphere. My aim was to reflect the essence of the cities typographically and using my own photographs applying to a conventional and traditional layout design-mix to create a radical retelling. The type is a labyrinth, a swirling girl, stripes, where is difficult to find your way around, you get lost in turns, in alleyways. This is reflected in my typographic layouts. Large typographic forms recall buildings viewed in plan, while fine lines of type trace routes and journeys across the cityscapes. The format recalls large, folded maps – like shape and form.
