Project 2: Holistic Herbalism: Medicine and Mysticism
Herbalism is an ancient tradition for cultures around the world but has seen a decline in commonality following the development of pharmaceuticals. Herbalism and herbal medicines have been used for centuries to cure ailments and to connect to a more spiritual side of life through the properties associated with various herbs. While we use herbs in some aspects of our lives today, like cooking and decoration, the meaning behind them has been lost over the centuries. Herbalism threads the line between medicinal and spiritual practices, allowing us to heal and grow. Throughout evolution, humans have spent a large portion of their time outdoors in forests and fields but now, we spend a majority of our time indoors and in cities. Herbalism, herb gardens and foraging create a small but direct contact with nature that can have a big impact on our everyday lives.
‘Holistic Herbalism: Medicine and Mysticism’ sets out to celebrate our human connection with nature and to inspire a spiritual connection with the world around us. As an herbal guidebook and cookbook, it encourages readers to use herbs and other plants in their everyday lives. These uses vary from headache healing teas to self-care baths and even protecting the home from negative spirits. The vibrant colours and patterns found throughout the book also introduce a joyful energy into this holistic practice.
