Laparoscopic instruments commonly injure surgeons who use them by causing excessive flexion and ulnar deviation of the wrist during tissue manipulation. Surgical tools that are not ergonomically designed can increase the risk of injury to the surgeon, such as repetitive stress injuries, strains, and sprains. ErgoTech is an innovative ergonomic redesign of the current laparoscopic tools that repositions the surgeon’s wrist into a more neutral position. The neutral position of the wrist reduces the overall stress and strain felt and can increase accuracy and precision of the surgeon. By changing how the user interacts with the basic controls, ErgoTech allows for a more comfortable experience while operating. Developing human factors such as improving comfort, reducing fatigue and injury for surgeons are critical and will impact positively on the effectivity of surgical training and will increase the overall professional operating life for surgeons.
