Talking Points Seminar: Create & Connect

Coined by the American sociologist Ray Oldenburg (The Great Good Place, 1994), the term ‘third place’ describes, neutral meeting areas which are between home and work such as cafés, community centres and beauty parlours. These venues act as vital social pillars for communities, generating a sense of belonging and participation in society. In the aftermath of the pandemic and context of the cost of living crises and the increasing digitalisation of meeting spaces, the final year students in the BA in Creative Industries and Visual Culture organised a free public event to discuss the issues concerning so-called ‘third places’ in Dublin today. Held at Third Space in Smithfield in Dublin, each student presented on a different aspect of the challenges facing these places and led a discussion of their peers on the topic.
