Hi, my name is Marly Diallo and I’m currently finishing my BA in Film and Broadcasting at TU Dublin. Over the past few years, I’ve become passionate about the process of filmmaking—not just as a form of creative expression, but as a way of translating emotion, thought, and perspective into something that can be shared and felt by others.
My passion for storytelling has always been there, but it really came into focus during this degree. I’ve found myself especially drawn to screenwriting and directing—two areas that allow me to shape stories with both intention and intuition. Writing gives me the space to build worlds, craft characters, and explore the nuances of voice, while directing gives me the opportunity to bring those worlds to life through performance, atmosphere, and rhythm.
One of the most defining moments of my journey so far has been writing and directing my short film Natural. The entire process—from the first draft to the final cut—felt incredibly personal and instinctive. It was the first time I felt like everything clicked: I wasn’t just completing a project; I was expressing something I cared deeply about. That project reminded me that stories don’t have to be big to be powerful—they just have to be honest.
I’m now more certain than ever that I want to pursue a career in screenwriting and direction. I love the idea of collaborating with others to bring something new into the world, and I’m excited by the challenge of refining my voice while learning from the people around me. My goal is to tell stories that feel grounded and human, and to continue developing my craft with every project I take on.
I’m really proud of the work I’ve done during my time at TUD, and incredibly grateful for the people I’ve been able to create with. I can’t wait to see where this path leads next.
Natural
“Natural” is a love letter to little Black girls, a visual ode encouraging them to embrace their natural coils and discover their voices. The film intimately portrays a young Black girl's journey towards self-acceptance, as she navigates a world that often doesn't celebrate her natural beauty. It's a powerful exploration of cultural identity and integration, challenging societal norms and celebrating the beauty of diversity. Through its narrative, “Natural” seeks to inspire confidence and self-love in young Black girls, reminding them of their inherent worth and the importance of embracing their unique identities.
