Hi, my name is Rachael. From a young age I have been fascinated by the way films and documentaries inspire, influence and connect people. The Film and Broadcasting course has brought all of these interests into my reality, allowing me to grow my passion for filmmaking.
Whether if it’s through directing, producing, camera operating or any of the other many roles, I love exploring creative ways to bring ideas to life onscreen. I am particularly interested in documentary production, where real stories can resonate deeply with audiences. I have been very lucky to have been given the opportunity to work as camera operator on many projects, seeing the finished project followed by my name in the credits brings me a great sense of achievement. Documentary production has particularly changed the way of viewing the world as I now see captivating stories even in everyday life, being from a rural village in Wicklow I often see the fascinating untold stories that rural Ireland has to offer and am eager to make and watch more Irish documentaries and films. I’m eager to continue developing my technical skills, gain hands-on experience and contribute my voice to projects that inspire me even more in the future.

In the second semester of final year, I was given the greatest opportunity to produce my idea for a documentary. Directing Paths was a brilliant experience. The initial idea developed from spending time in the art classroom of the adult education center during my transition year work experience, meeting the people I could see how mindful art can be for people who are looking for a second chance at education. This suck with me as the environment was so nurturing not only for making art but also sharing stories. The experience of meeting new people and sharing their life stories on screen taught me so much about creating a safe and welcoming environment that allows people to feel comfortable to communicate their stories, and this will guide me in future projects. Seeing people from all different paths of live join together to focus on themselves was so inspiring, their passion for art reflected my own passion for filmmaking, this environment was the perfect atmosphere for making the documentary.
This project has given me the confidence in believing in myself and my work, a lesson that will inspire me for life.
