Lauren Riordan is a Dublin based visual artist working primarily in process driven sculptural mechanisms. Her work explores themes of emotional expression using non-conventional art materials.
Somatic Mutations is an installation that consists of large-scale biomorphic sculptural forms. Their making process is both improvised and spontaneous. The sculptures have long tangling limbs that intertwine and tangle together appearing to be struggling and contorted, their forms blur the lines between the synthetic and the natural. Each sculpture is enveloped in black gaffer tape, stretched to cover their entirety. This specific material was chosen to articulate resilience and the ability to mend and repair. The sculptures involve a meticulous making process of layering tape that attempts to imbue the works with biomorphic qualities. The shape and scale of the sculptures intimately relate to the body and reflects the bodies struggles and vulnerabilities. These works seek to foster connection and empathy, transcending individual emotions to tap into the universal human condition.
