Journalism

Gary Petrov

I am a journalist, writer and multi-media creative. My interests lie in arts, culture and entertainment, human rights and representation; and current affairs and politics.

While studying in TU Dublin, I developed my interest in writing and storytelling through a journalistic lens while honing my multi-media skills as an audio and video content creator. I wrote for TU Dublin’s student publications and did stints as an editor in chief and a section editor, and I interned with LGBTQ+ publication GCN.

In my final year, I presented/produced a video Q&A interview with content creator Olivia Spuds, I produced the audio documentary ‘Love Can Move Mountains’ with Audio Tales TU Dublin and submitted the thesis: ‘An Analysis of the Audience Perceptions of the LGBTQ+ Representation in the Netflix Series ‘Heartstopper’’.

From doing the BA in Journalism programme at TU Dublin, I realised that I wish to work in media in multiple ways and I believe that the current media model requires versatility in order to thrive.

Love Can Move Mountains

Love Can Move Mountains is the tale of how a 22-year-old woman in 1988 Dublin broke off an engagement and found love behind the Iron Curtain.

Whether it’s the trials and tribulations of navigating a new romance beyond the summer, falling in love after falling out of love, organising a wedding between two countries on opposite sides of the continent, or integrating into each other’s lives – Love Can Move Mountains details the experience of a young Irish woman and what manifested from the serendipitous meet-cute with a young Bulgarian man during the downfall of the Iron Curtain era in Eastern Europe.

Allow yourself to be taken on a journey to the late 1980s as my mother tells all in this tale of how she met my father – all thanks to her and a friend going on a package holiday to Bulgaria by chance instead of Cyprus and a dash of love moving a mountain or two.

An interview recorded over one winter afternoon, my mother brought me down her very own memory lane.

Love Can Move Mountains is an audio documentary produced by Gary Petrov, a final year journalism student at TU Dublin, for Audio Tales TU Dublin.

Love Can Move Mountains is told over four parts in one mega audio documentary:
Part One: The Meet-Cute
Part Two: A Wedding and the Iron Curtain
Part Three: The Iron Curtain Has Fallen
Part Four: Looking Back in Retrospect and Advice to Future Generations
