I chose to study Journalism because I have always had an interest in everything media. What I loved about this course was that it gave me the opportunity to dive into areas that I have a huge passion, such as sports and media. This course helped developed my real-world journalistic skills, whilst boosting my confidence in different areas of media production; presenting and writing stories out of my comfort zone.
I have thoroughly enjoyed my time in college for the past four years. It gave me a taste into being a real-world journalist by reaching deadlines for news companies, like our modules for Clic News, TheCity.ie and The Liberties, where my favourite stories to write were about sports and entertainment. I took this theme through to my final radio project, which I produced by myself through the skills that I gained over the last few years on Adobe Audition.
I am excited for what comes next in my career of media. Completing the BA Journalism course has reinforced my idea that I want to work with media in every aspect of the word.
The Game Plan is a compelling and motivational podcast that tells the tale of Billy, a 21-year-old football player who has dedicated his life to pursuing his one goal: becoming a professional football player. Billy's career started with kicking a ball around in his garden with his brother, which later developed into a flourishing career, where he competed with elite athletes. Billy’s journey has been everything but easy. This podcast examines the highs and lows of what it truly takes to pursue a career in sports — the talent, willpower, and ambition, together with battling injury and the uncertainty of it all.
Billy's love of football is more than just a pastime; it's an identity, a way of life, and a purpose that influences every choice he makes. Everything was centred around the game, from early morning training sessions to skipping parties and even holidays. However, Billy’s dreams of making it as a youngster was cut short with Covid, and his never-ending injuries that he has been battling for years. Not only does The Game Plan detail his physical setbacks but also the toll it took emotionally, and the mental challenges it took to keep fighting.
The podcast gives listeners a close-up view of Billy's mindset, challenges, and development. He talks honestly and openly about the struggles young athletes experience. In the episode, we hear from Billy himself and his teammates to give a complete picture into who he is as a player and a person.
The Game Plan also explores how Billy dealt with moments of doubt and the pressure to constantly prove himself. His journey reveals the internal battles athletes face, not just with injury but with themselves in the mirror. This adds another layer to his story – what happens when you are forced to pause the only life you have ever known, and how you come back stronger.
Beyond merely being a sports narrative, The Game Plan explores identity, resiliency, and what to do when things do not go as planned. It examines the thin boundary between fixation and passion, as well as what it is like to define oneself solely by a dream. Many young athletes can identify with this story; putting your all into one goal and how to battle it when life throws itself at you.
Whether you are a sports fan, an aspiring athlete or just interested in stories of perseverance, The Game Plan offers a fresh, real look into it all. It asks the question of how much we are willing to give and when, or if, it is ever time to call it quits.
The Game Plan is fundamentally a tale about perseverance, hope and dedication. It is a story set to inform and inspire, how to find the strength to push for what you want and never give up. It reminds us that while setbacks can shake us, they do not have to define us.
Billy’s experience teaches us that sometimes the toughest opponent is not on the pitch—it’s the voice in your own head. His resilience is a reminder that real strength comes from how you respond when everything seems lost. His journey proves that success is not always a straight path, it is sometimes about how you adapt when the game plan changes.
