My name is Kieran Whelan. Husband to Catherne and father to James and Claire. We have two grandchildren. My love of photography has been constant over the years. In the mid-80’s I converted the spare bedroom in our new home into a black & white darkroom. Until the advent of digital photography in the early 2000’s I used 35mm film cameras.
As well as photography, I have a keen interest in art & design. The works of abstract expressionist painters like Rothko and Mondrian interest me. I have a liking for the enduring style statement of Art Deco architecture & design. I have a keen interest in topographic photography. Photography of our manmade environment. Taking influences from the photographers from the 1970’s school of New Topographics in America.
Prior to embarking on the Photography BA Programme in TU Dublin, I graduated from Coláiste Dhúlaigh, Coolock, with a QQI 6 in Photography.
Built in the 1960’s by Wates Construction. The North Dublin suburb of Bayside is over 50 years old and has developed immensely in terms of community spirit, meitheal, and day-to-day social engagement. Bayside, situated on the coast, 12 kms from Dublin City Centre, embraces about 2,000 households, a church, retail shops, a DART station, restaurants, a medical centre, and a pub.
The ‘hub’ of Bayside is ‘The Square,’ rarely a day goes by without a visit and you are sure to cross paths with a friend.
A Place Less Ordinary is a record of the area as it looks today together with the people living and working in this vibrant community. My work documents the architecture, the urban landscape, and the heritage of Bayside. I also present portrait photographs of individuals and groups; my neighbours and friends in Bayside, who actively come together to make Bayside a unique place.
