Product Design

Abbie Peard

My name is Abbie, I’m a final year student in Product Design. My products are designed with empathy and purpose; I approach every step of the process with the end user in mind to ensure their needs and expectations shape the design. My work is driven by how people interact with products, both physically and emotionally. I pay close attention to how touchpoints, colours, and textures can guide and support the users' experience. I am passionate about designing for positive change, focusing on safety, wellbeing, and connection; this can also be seen in the interfaces I create, an area I find very interesting and would love to develop my skills further. My goal is to make people feel supported, seen, and empowered by the things they use every day, and design intuitive and meaningful products that fit into people's lives.

Bookling Reading Buddy

The Bookling Reading Buddy is a care-based companion designed to help primary school children build consistent reading habits. Children take care of their buddy by reading aloud to it for 20 minutes a day – this helps the buddy “fall asleep”, encouraging routine through a nurturing interaction. It uses facial expressions, coloured lights, chimes, and speech to guide and celebrate their progress. Pulling on the antenna controls the volume, and the children can ask their buddy for help using a wake word and be given guidance on the story contents or pronunciation help.

Guardians can access the accompanying app to add books to the library database by scanning the book’s barcode, editing the library, and viewing their child’s reading data. Bookling records the number of words skipped or mispronounced, so guardians can view this data and track their child’s progress.
