Sepsis is the bodies negative response to an infection and is one of the most common causes of deaths in hospitals in Ireland. The reason for this is that sepsis can cause organ failure in as little as 12 hours. It is difficult to diagnose as there no “perfect” test to identify it. This along with an increase in Accident and Emergency wait times in hospitals around the country poses a huge threat to those suspected of sepsis as it will impact the time it takes for patients to receive the treatment they may need.

BioReact is a rapid testing device for detecting sepsis outside of hospital settings. It is designed to give at risk patients a way to monitor their symptoms at home after being released from hospitals. The patient will receive a device and a code to gain access to the mobile application that must be used alongside the device. The patient will take this test once or twice a day for a period of time, which will be agreed by a medical professional. This device and mobile application will then analyse the data gathered during the test and the patients logged symptoms (done through the app) and make a decision. If the data indicated that the patient could be septic the patient will receive an alert informing them that they should seek immediate medical attention.

BioReact will help to lower sepsis associated costs such as long-term hospital stays and expensive medical treatments by allowing patients to receive treatment at a faster rate thus lowering the risk level of sepsis-related complications.
