Jake O’Dowd

My name is Jake O’Dowd, and I am a Product Design student at Technological University Dublin with a strong interest in problem-solving and user-centred design. Throughout my studies, I have worked on a range of projects focused on medical devices, fire safety products, and assistive technologies, developing skills in research, CAD modelling, prototyping, and manufacturing processes. I enjoy the full design process, from developing initial ideas through totesting and refining solutions. I am particularly interested in designing products that improve safety, health, and everyday experiences for users. I am motivated, adaptable, and always eager to learn new skills and take on new challenges within the design industry.

Stove Watch

Cooking-related fires are the leading cause of household fires, often caused by unattended cooking, distraction, and delayed response. StoveWatch is a wall-mounted automatic stovetop fire suppression system designed to detect, warn, and suppress cooking-related fires without user intervention. An infrared sensor continuously monitors the stovetop, triggering an alarm and text alert when dangerous temperatures are detected, before automatically deploying a wet chemical suppressant directly onto the hob.

A heat-sensitive glass vial positioned beneath the housing provides a secondary non-electrical activation method. If the primary system fails, heat from the fire shatters the vial and mechanically triggers suppression, ensuring activation even during electrical failure.
