Product Design

Kealan Stewart

I am a final-year product design student, with my aim to design products that help create a more sustainable society. My final year project aims to create a safer environment for road users, specifically scooter and bike users by encouraging helmet use. It also aims to tackle the social stigma behind them using different behavior change methods.

Over the past four years, I have created different products to aid people in their everyday life, such as medication management devices for dementia patients, and creating low-tech systems to aid building bonds between old and young generations in rural towns. My projects aim to make a sustainable future, either through environmental, economic, or social sustainability. I enjoy applying my creative problem-solving techniques to technical problems, ensuring to place the user at the center of my designs.

The Helmate System

The Helmate is a system consisting of a pod, helmet and app. Micromobility providers license the system and in turn, will be provided with this system to protect their users and encourage safe riding. The pod is located on the strap of the helmet. Its goal is to detect whether the helmet is being worn or not via proximity sensors. Users can also buy their own pod, and apply it to their own helmet alternatively

The app is the source for people to earn rewards for wearing a helmet. When the user rides on a micromobility providers’ scooter, with a helmet and pod, they will earn Helmate Coin. They redeem this for vouchers, gift-cards, or donations to charities. Rewards range from partnerships with local businesses to large multinational corporations. The user can invite friends or join local clubs with likeminded people, to help target the social stigma of wearing helmets.
