Visual Communication

Aoife Roche

I am an illustrator/designer based in Dublin with a passion for visual development and character design. I believe that exploring the more niche and bizarre topics can really pave the way for a distinct and creative narrative in design. My work consists of concept art, animation and illustration. I always aim to draw from themes that are otherwise niche and uncommon, taking certain aspects or merging others to produce a unique narrative and visual style that sparks inspiration and awe in the audience.

Object Permanence

Object Permanence is a wordless visual narrative based on the phenomena of ambiguous loss and object permanence. While research has been made on both phenomena, it has never been discussed as to how both can influence one another. It is especially noticeable for adolescents who would experience ambiguous loss through the breakdown of relationships or people moving abroad. This disconnect can cause object permanence to arise, where the person is left still believing that who they metaphorically lost is still there in fleeting traces. As a response, the wordless visual narrative illuminates and provokes discussions around this disconnect, creating an illustrated story that adolescents or anyone who has dealt with this phenomenon can resonate with and find comfort in. While dealing with waves of ambiguous loss can be confusing and reckless, it is important to remember that it gets easier after each wave.

Into the Foxgrove is a proof-of-concept video game that encourages players to regulate their circadian rhythm and reduce unnecessary smartphone usage. The game uses real-time integration, which encourages players to access the game at a specific time in the evening and exit later. Merging themes of dreams, animal archetypes and liminal spaces together, Into the Foxgrove encourages
