Miriam Hurley is a Dublin-based designer who finds joy in exploring various creative mediums, including animation, illustration, and publication design. She has a particular affinity for image-making and typography. The body of work she created throughout her studies at TU Dublin encompasses a wide range of topics, from addressing social issues such as climate change to projects in arts and entertainment, including music. With a deep-seated passion for storytelling, Miriam utilises her skills in visual communication to bring visual narratives to life, connecting with audiences and raising awareness about important topics.
This animation project is a response to the RSA Centenary Celebrations brief, commemorating the 100-year milestone of the SDA awards. It serves as a tribute to past innovations while looking forward to nurturing the next generation of design trailblazers. The aim of this project was to address the educational gap surrounding design careers, particularly prevalent in Irish secondary schools. The animation offers an accessible and engaging introduction to the world of design. Through the narrative structure, the animation takes the viewer on a journey through the evolution of design, using a character as their guide. By following the character’s experiences, viewers are encouraged to see themselves as contributors to ongoing design innovation, sparking curiosity and inspiring them to explore design as a viable and exciting career path.
Continuo is a typographic exploration responding to the ISTD brief "The Line," focusing on the evolution of music notation. The publication embarks on a journey, tracing the trajectory of lines in musical expression. Traversing a visual timeline, it explores the transition from early neumatic strokes to the standardised symbols of traditional Western notation, and onward to the expressive freedom of graphic notation. The aim of this project was to trace the historical development of Western music notation and to explore alternative notation systems, highlighting their evolution, significance, and impact on musical practice. By examining notation's progression from its origins to contemporary forms, Continuo sheds light on music's evolving language and the intricate relationship between notation and musical expression.
