Visual Communication

Ploypailin Jitphulphon

My name is Ploy. I am an Irish Thai artist based in Dublin. My works revolve around human relationships, dual identity, Buddhist practices, and self-reflection. I enjoy creating projects that are personal and focus on the mundane moments in everyday life. The main subjects of my work are family members and close friends; they are a huge part of my life and have become my muses.

In the past four years in Visual Communication, I have grown up and developed both as an artist and as a person. The mediums I enjoy the most are audiovisual and installation, which I had the pleasure of showcasing at the Auspicious Eight exhibition in 2024 and also early January this year. I like to draw the audience into the space created in these installations, and through my work, be reminded of their own life experiences too.

The Art of Food

Growing up with Asian immigrant parents, food was always important. It wasn’t until recently that I started learning from them how to cook authentic Thai meals. Recipes passed down from other relatives. The settling that the piece of writing describes is for me the settling of all the chaos throughout the week when we all gather around for dinner. Sometimes life gets so busy that we tend to forget about the little time we have together in this lifetime. The little moments are what we take with us.

This is a love letter. To my beloved friends. To my old crush in primary school. To the lecturers who guide me in the right direction. To my siblings who test my patience every day. To my parents and their unconditional love and support. To myself, who has lots to learn. And to you reading this, what are your little moments?

The Most Valuable Thing in the World

‘The most valuable thing in the world” explores the Sustainable Development Goal 12: Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns. Throughout this publication, I have drawn on the privilege of minimalism and the unspoken judgement towards cluttered households. Coming from an immigrant family, we simply do not have the privilege of severely decluttering our homes.

Clutter is not what it looks like. Hoarding can be better for the planet. Minimising on what we consume and being conscious of the waste we produce is vital in achieving Goal 12. Sustainability is an act of courage. “Yes, we tend to collect things.” This does not make us any less capable or unaware of our consumption patterns. We are trying our best in our current circumstances and that is radical in the gentlest of ways. Conscious consumption in everyday practices will accumulate and eventually you will realise the impact of utilising what you have.
