Keeping Dublin Lit: A brief history of Dublin’s public lighting

This presentation featured in a semi-public event, Seeing in The Dark, examining the various public lighting systems and examples that can be seen all across Dublin, predominantly the city. The event was organised by final year Contemporary Visual Culture students as a part of the Talking Points module. From candlelight to gaslight and to the current electric street lights, different aspects and standpoints of Dublin’s history can be told by looking at the lights we see on the streets every day. These changes will be discussed, while also including the current state of public street lighting in Dublin and what lies ahead. The impact lighting has on the overall character of the city and the effect on the visual landscape will also be mentioned. Each different example presented will reveal a different aspect of Dublin city’s rich street lighting heritage. Throughout this piece, I will reveal and clearly illustrate the role street lighting plays on the essence and character of the city.

The methodology used for this thesis will be information collected from online archives, interviews, newspapers, and published reports. The research questions will aid in leading this research.
