Haymarket Cultural Centre - 2021

This proposed thesis project aims to convert a multi-storey car park and retail building located in Drogheda, Co Louth into a fun and creative cultural centre. According to the 2016 census, Drogheda’s population stands at 40,956 making it the largest town in the Republic of Ireland. Drogheda currently does not have any large, low-cost community led spaces for people to meet up and create together. The town has a large immigrant and refugee population, due to the Mosney Direct Provision centre which is located just outside Drogheda in Julianstown, Co Meath. The residents in Mosney deserve a free and welcoming space where they can come to practice their own culture, meet new people and make the transition into life in Ireland much more seamless.

The focus and drive of this project is the idea of integration, community and collaboration and to create a fun, vibrant environment to do these things is what this project is all about.

I have included spaces for people to create together in the Cookery School, sample new and exciting dishes in the Cafe and Restaurant, learn and grow in the Creche, read and explore in the Library, reflect and unwind in the Gym/Yoga studios, heal and grow in the Counselling spaces and unwind and catch up on the Rooftop.

I enjoyed the whole design process and I hope you enjoy what was created from it.
