Project 1: The Mill Hotel
The prime aim of this thesis project is to redesign the derelict Donaghy’s Mill Building into a gourmet and wellness retreat destination.
A ‘scenographic’ typology of spaces offers a sense of lucidity and refreshment. The hotel welcomes guests to stay at the relaxing and vibrant bedrooms, enjoy the fine dining at the chef’s table and indulge at the spa centre.
The overall design concept stems from experiments with the aromatherapy steam and smoke. The dominant flowing forms and shapes along with arches inspired by Drogheda’s historic architecture allowed the creation of organic flow and a sense of balance.
The hotel consists of a lobby and a lounge area with a café with an outdoor seating offering an opportunity to enjoy the scenic views of the River Boyne. The hotel contains an all day dining restaurant that provides casual dining. The Speciality Restaurant contains two chef’s tables where guests can watch the food being prepared and served straight away by the world's top chefs.
The hotel also offers spa facilities including massage, hydrotherapy, a sauna, a steam room and a 20m indoor swimming pool.
The vibrant use of colours creates an invigorating and enjoyable atmosphere. The use of raw and sustainable materials pays homage to the historical identity and character of the building.
