Project 1: The Influence of Metropolis

‘The Influence of Metropolis’ is a typographic response, in the form of a publication, to the 2020 ISTD brief ‘Silence is Golden,’ the focus of which is in celebrating the era of Silent Cinema. The publication centers around Fritz Lang’s 1927 masterpiece Metropolis, it explores the themes, characters and plot of Metropolis while also introducing a timeline of the films that have influenced Metropolis, and in turn the films that Metropolis inspired. This influence is shown visually using both a CMYK device and strips of film that run through the publication affecting type and image.

‘The Influence of Metropolis’ is targeted towards both an audience that may be unfamiliar with the titular film in order to introduce them to a silent cinema masterpiece, as well as an audience that may be familiar with the film, but unaware of the influence that it has had on cinema in the last 100 years.
