Hi, my name is Emily Sullivan and I am soon graduating from TU Dublin’s Film and Broadcasting course. Over the last four years I’ve been involved with numerous creative projects, trying to gain as much experience as possible within the world of film. I’ve always loved working collaboratively with people, sharing ideas in order to create the best version of a film or story that we can. Over my last two years in college, I have found a particular love for documentary filmmaking, choosing that as my specialty for our final year. I developed a passion for telling real stories and seeing the varying emotional reactions that people can have when participating in or watching a documentary. In our third year of college, I got the opportunity to direct my own documentary about my grandparents, with my Grandad telling me the story of their marriage and how his life has changed since my Granny’s passing. In my final year of college I have had a producing role on two of the final documentaries chosen, helping organise and develop the films throughout each semester. My passion within this course, however, really flourished within the academic writing side. I really enjoyed the process of deciding on a dissertation topic, engaging with research methods, and reading various relevant literature. My dissertation focused on the subversion of the road movie genre, focusing on how it has the ability to represent women and gender performance theory. I look forward in the future to developing my writing and research skills, using all of the knowledge I have learned in the past four years to help me move through the professional world.
