Hi! My name is Kealin Garvey, and I am in my final year of a BA (Hons) in Film & Broadcasting at Technological University Dublin. Before enrolling in this course, I decided to do a PLC in Film & Television to make sure this was the right career for me and quickly realised this is my passion. It made me understand just how much I love the collaborative nature of film and I am looking forward to entering this booming industry. Throughout my degree I have been fortunate enough to experience many different roles on short films such as Directing, Writing, Producing, Editing, Production Design, Continuity and Camera Operator. However, the two roles I have come back to time and time again were Production Design and Editing. I really enjoy the creative aspect of these roles as I get to help bring peoples visions to the screen. I am very enthusiastic about Production Design, this is highlighted in my dissertation which questioned to what extent can Alfred Hitchcock’s films be understood through auteur theory as opposed to the collaborative nature of production design.
Group / Individual Project title and your role: Resting Place (Director Helen Finnegan) - Stills Photographer
Reincarnation Street - Writer, Director and Co-Editor
Compliance (Director Saoirse Kennedy) - Production Design
Tech Cemetery (Director Liam Mac Aogain) - Co-Producer and Continuity
In my final year of this degree, I was fortunate enough to be 1 of 4 students who had their scripts chosen to be made into a short film. It was such an incredible opportunity to be able to write, direct and co-edit. Reincarnation Street is a dark comedy following the story of Fred on his journey to be reincarnated. While sitting in the waiting room he learns about other people’s experience with this process. Fred finds out that to be reincarnated as something good you must have behaved well in your original life. This leads to Fred confessing a dark secret he has been hiding. The inspiration came from watching the Saw films, it was interesting to see the rationale behind why these people had been chosen to be “tested”. The character Jigsaw chooses people who he felt didn’t value their lives enough. Getting the opportunity to create this film expanded my understanding of the communication, teamwork and focus that is required when creating a film.
