Marta Ortiz González

I am a Galician artist based in Dublin. My practice spans drawing, painting and ceramic sculpture, exploring different processes as a key part of my work. Engaging with phenomenology, I am interested in spontaneous and intuitive ways of making, allowing the body to guide the gesture through my supports, mainly canvas or paper.

I also make ceramic figures that extend these marks into three dimensions, echoing the lines present in the paintings and drawings. Building, preparing and engaging with the materials and supports is also a key part of my projects. My work is grounded in a perceptive approach that values the process and the relationship between making and meaning, grounding my research in quiet observation.

Enxorias

This body of work explores the notion of infancy as a constructed space, revisited from an adult perspective. It focuses on the tension between these two modes of being, articulated through intuitive mark-making. I engage with the child-like way of making by working on the floor, using tools such as coloured pencils and soft crayons that evoke early childhood experiences, while the smaller drawings are a more intimate approach to personal narratives.

Graphite often conveys a more controlled or adult register and loose and playful gestures introduce a sense of spontaneity. The installation expands these ideas into space through ceramic figures displayed on shelves of varying sizes, as if emerging directly from the paintings, involving haptic abilities that are developed during infancy.

Through repetition, intuition and moments of boredom, the work resists systems of control and productivity. Instead, making becomes a way of thinking in which meaning remains open, inviting viewers to engage with fragments of memory and construct their own unresolved narratives.
