Sara-Jane Mooney

I'm Sara-Jane, a fine art graduate with a love for time consuming drawings that show the haptic quality of mark-making. I am passionate about exploring themes of time and temporality, negotiated control and labour made visible without narration.

My practice develops through tactile, research-driven projects that unfold slowly My drawing style is fluid and responsive. It’s not about depicting water but thinking through it water set of the centre of my process while muscle memory operates more slowly in the background the shapes how I make marks I make always consciously directing it.

I admire the permanence of a smudge or accidental mark on paper. There’s a beauty in not knowing how one mark will influence the next. For me, making art is about staying true to myself. it becomes a way of recording time, place and a feeling - holding it all within a single unique experience.

The Shape of Holding

An exploration of haptic sensory driven drawing shaped by my experience of water which has informed how I think through water, engaging with this in it many forms to reflect its ephemeral nature.

This project is informed by hydrofeminism, which looks at how everything; our bodies, nature, and materials, are connected by water and constant change. This way of thinking influences how I approach making art. Each work captures a moment of presence, while also encouraging a quiet sense of care and attention. The drawings are created at a large scale, and are the result of sustained physical engagement and can be understood as events that have taken place. Repetition is a defining part of the process. Every mark carries the time of its making. The drawings exist from quiet labour and demonstrates how drawing can hold thought and meaning without needing to fully explain itself.
