Growing up in the countryside surrounded by nature, I have always found inspiration through observing my surroundings. Art has been the way I have always leaned into expressing this curiosity with the world around me. Since I was young, I often gravitated towards different kinds of creative outlets and that’s why I chose to pursue a degree in Fine Art. I completed a Level 5 QQI in Art, Craft & Design and that was when I knew I wanted to develop my artistic knowledge and skills in a 3rd level setting.
During my time at TUD I have developed a practice that explores my own reinterpretation of special experiences. These are generally sites that I am familiar with and have been present in for an extended period of time. I think this is important for my personal response to have experienced these places without any intention of creating art from them in order for me to eventually decide to do so.
This installation combines print, sculpture and textiles in order to recreate elements from my bedroom in Dublin. I became acquainted with this space in September last year and we have been through a lot together, so in ways it’s a way of paying respect to the place that’s kept me comfortable and warm over the past 9 months. I’m intrigued by the reality that this room that feels so private to me now has been resided in and cherished by strangers before me. I will never know how they experienced this room, the milestones that passed them by while they lived here, the belongings that came and went with them through this space.
The two main aspects I aim to reimagine through my work are structure and texture. After we depart from intimate spaces, these details will remain immortalised through our memory.
