I’ve always had a strong passion for media and storytelling. From making stop-motion Lego films when I was eight to filming football videos as I got older, the drive to create has always been a constant in my life. Alongside this, I developed a deep love for sport, particularly through the GAA. Representing Naomh Barróg is something I’ve been proud of for years, and it’s a connection that has only grown stronger over time.

When I was younger, I saw sport as something you played - the focus was entirely on what happened on the pitch. But as I matured, I began to appreciate the wider meaning of the club and especially the people who give it its identity. Given my long-standing interest in video and documentary-making, it felt natural to base my final year project on a subject that brings together both my creative passions and my personal roots.

Just Like Home - The Story of Naomh Barróg

This documentary explores the enduring community spirit of Naomh Barróg GAA Club, a cornerstone of life in Kilbarrack since its foundation in 1974. Drawing on original interviews with founding member Dick Fields, club volunteers and current players, the film traces the club’s evolution from humble beginnings as a school team to a thriving club fielding over 40 teams across all age groups.

At its core, the documentary examines how Naomh Barróg has consistently prioritised people over performance, positioning sport as a vehicle for inclusion, belonging and personal development. Through firsthand accounts, the film highlights the club’s emphasis on respect, identity and community cohesion, capturing what it means to be part of what many describe as “One Big Family.” By weaving together historical insight with modern voices, the documentary presents Naomh Barróg not just as a GAA club, but as a social hub that shapes lives both on and off the pitch.
