Is Media Coverage of Transportation Incidents Sensationalised?

Whenever there is a major transport related incident, such as a plane crash or a train collision, they receive extensive coverage across a variety of media outlets. This is to be expected as these events are a rare occurrence. But just how balanced is the coverage of these incidents? Can you really trust what is being reported? Does the coverage blow some topics out of proportion?

In the modern media landscape, there is an endless race to break news on a story. This, combined with the battle for attention in the online world, risk sensationalising coverage. By analysing the coverage of three transport related incidents, this dissertation investigates whether that coverage is sensationalised. Think about how these stories are discussed, and then apply those thoughts to other areas, such as politics.

Getting Back on Track – The plans to revitalise Ireland’s railway network

This is one of the minor aspects of the Major Intermedia Project. This feature article discusses one of the towns that lost its rail connection and how people felt. Then, it goes on to discuss the All-Island Strategic Rail Review – the plan that recommended how to revitalise the Irish railway network. As part of this project, interviews were conducted with politicians and members of advocacy groups who want to see expanded rail services in Ireland.
