Rebecca Halpenny

My name is Rebecca Halpenny, a photographer working in documentary and portraiture, rooted in the textures and rhythms of rural life. My practice centres on observing the everyday moments and overlooked details that carry emotional weight. I photograph people, animals and environments I know personally, including family, community and equestrian spaces. Through this, I explore themes of identity, memory, and belonging, allowing meaning to emerge through familiarity and time. Working primarily on location, my portraiture is shaped by the trust and presence of the subject within their own environment. I take a minimal and responsive approach, using natural light and avoiding intervention wherever possible. Photography, for me, is both a form of preservation and a way of understanding. I try to hold the fleeting moments in place while maintaining their ambiguity and inviting viewers to find significance in the ordinary.

Built For Purpose

‘Built For Purpose’ is a documentary photography project examining the equestrian industry across Ireland, through the movement of horses between different contexts. Using the horse’s body and the spaces it occupies, the work explores themes of class, labour, and value. The project traces how horses shift in meaning, from status symbol to working animal, from sport to livelihood. It observes the equestrian communities that exist side by side but rarely intersect, from the formality of hunting to the precarity of fairs and the labour behind race yards. While attentive to people within these spaces, the work also focuses closely on the physical differences of the animal, considering the horse’s body as a record of its use. By following horses across these environments, the project reflects on how class, tradition and labour are inscribed onto them, revealing broader inequalities within contemporary rural life.
