My name is Michael Gallagher. I am a Product Design student from Donegal, Ireland. I am focused on creating feasible solutions to real life problems. My main goal is always to design with reason and not produce unnecessary design. I love to design and create with a high level of detail and precision, I believe the quote “Why do it if you aren’t going to give 100%?”. My style leans more on the engineering side of Product Design and this is what I enjoy most.
Using my hands is a skill of mine that I have developed in the past 4 years through college and my personal profession, I believe being able to create high quality models is an important trait in a Product Designer. I want to be known as a designer who never left a detail untouched, understanding the responsibility we have has made me desire this.
LUMINEX is a portable LiDAR-based room scanning system designed to support electricians and interior designers in planning lighting layouts. The device captures spatial data and converts it into clear data driven outputs including lighting layouts, lux levels and cable routing guidance using Artificial Intelligence through a companion application.
The project is a response to challenges identified in construction workflows, where lighting design often relies on estimation, experience and a fragmented workflow. This creates a high cognitive load, leading to of errors and inefficiencies on-site. By combining physical hardware with digital outputs, LUMINEX simplifies complicated planning and externalises decision-making. The system allows users to quickly visualise and implement lighting solutions with more confidence and a high level of accuracy. The result is a user-centred tool that improves workflow efficiency, betters communication between appropriate stakeholders and provides more informed decision-making without taking over in real-world environments.
