GradX Product Design

Emma Gibbons

I am a Product Design student with a strong interest in inclusive, empathetic, and human-centered design. My work focuses on creating products that improve everyday experiences by reducing physical and emotional barriers. My final year project, Uile, explores accessibility within the beauty industry through the development of an assistive makeup application device for users with reduced dexterity and motor control difficulties.

I aim to combine functionality, ergonomics, and aesthetics to create products that feel intuitive, empowering, and game changing for the user. I am particularly interested in accessible consumer products, bringing enjoyment to mundane everyday experiences, and finding alternative and efficient solutions through thoughtful, meaningful design.

Uile

Uile is an accessible beauty project focused on supporting independent makeup application for users with reduced dexterity, grip strength, or motor control difficulties. The project was developed in response to research highlighting the lack of accessibility within mainstream beauty products, where many tools and packaging systems unintentionally exclude users with physical disabilities or chronic conditions.

The final outcome is a handheld assistive makeup application device designed to reduce repetitive effort, improve control, and support a more comfortable user experience. The device uses motorized application modes alongside interchangeable heads to adapt to different makeup routines and user needs. Ergonomic support features and simplified interactions were incorporated throughout the design process to improve accessibility without compromising aesthetics. Rather than creating a clinical assistive product, Uile aims to position accessibility within contemporary beauty culture, demonstrating how inclusive design can be both functional and desirable.
