Up Rooted
Uprooted is a photography project highlighting the homeless crisis in Ireland today. This crisis is one that many people do not understand to its full extent, nor is it one where the repercussions on those affected are fully considered. This project aims to increase awareness but also foster a greater understanding of the crisis by documenting aspects of the everyday experience of those who find themselves homeless.
Drawing on the traditions of participatory photography projects, disposable cameras were given to homeless families living in emergency accommodation. They were encouraged to show us what is it like to live under these conditions. Alongside this strand, a series of photographs were shot on slide film and are projected in combination with texts based on extracts from interviews with family members. By spending a series of nights in different hotel rooms, photographing their basic and cramped conditions, I am trying to make visible how damaging it can be for the emotional, physical and psychological growth of children and their parents who are forced to live here. Under these conditions, and sanctioned by the Irish government, families are unable to flourish and are left hidden away and forgotten.
