Flight Study
Flight Study looks at the human desire to fly. The act of flying is a kind of performance that
intrigues and captivates an audience. This manifests in a number of ways, not least among the subcultures which have emerged from aviation such as the plane spotters and those who build and fly remote-controlled planes. These are two prominent and long-standing hobbies in Dublin, with plane spotting taking place on the Old Airport Road and model flying in the Phoenix Park.
The project reflects on how the desire to fly has evolved since the first powered airplane flight by the Wright brothers in 1903. By examining the performance of flight through the construction of small paper planes, I also interrogate my own memory and fascination with the phenomenon of flight. Construction becomes a recurring theme throughout the project, emphasising that flight has only been achieved through centuries of experimentation.
