GradX Interior and Furniture Design

Ashley Hennessy

I am an Interior Design student with a strong artistic background, bringing a well-rounded and expressive approach to visual storytelling and spatial design. Having lived in Cancún, Mexico for nine years, I have been deeply influenced by Caribbean and Latin aesthetics, particularly their vibrant colours, layered textures, and eclectic character. Equally, growing up in rural Ireland and embracing my mixed heritage has shaped my appreciation for atmosphere, craftsmanship, and emotionally driven spaces.

My passion for interior design began at the age of nine after completing a school project where we designed a bedroom inside a shoebox. From then on, whenever I entered a space, I would naturally reimagine what it could look like, constantly sketching random floor plans and redesign ideas. I am especially drawn to bright, playful, and immersive interiors that transform spaces into entirely different worlds. Studying ceramics at Escuela de Arte San Telmo Malaga for my Erasmus greatly influenced my written thesis, deepening my understanding of materiality, craftsmanship, and creative experimentation within interior design.

Loinnir: A Coastal Private Members’ Club

My thesis project reimagines the Sandhouse Hotel in Donegal as a premium private members’ club located beside Rossnowlagh Beach, one of Ireland’s most celebrated surf destinations. I chose this location due to my personal connection to the beach, where I surf several times each year, and my appreciation for the atmosphere and landscape of the Donegal coastline. I named the project Loinnir, derived from the Irish language, meaning fleeting moments of light and beauty inspired by the Atlantic Ocean. The concept explores the relationship between social interaction, retreat, and coastal living through a sequence of immersive interior spaces, including a café, retail space, Coastal Lounge, and two-level bar. Inspired by the surrounding landscape, the interior palette combines deep blues, sea greens, and coral reds to create a vibrant environment that reflects Donegal’s creative culture, artistic identity, and strong sense of place.
