GradX Product Design

Louise Hackett

My name is Louise Hackett and I study Product Design. Good design solves a need that improves quality of life not standard of living; my personal design ethos guiding my work. I believe that integral to good design is ethics regarding labor and the planet. I reject the idea that this must add significant cost; I think an open-minded approach can allow for uncostly changes that have positive impact. I have shown this in practice with my final year product Shake Shelter.

I explore creativity by making handicrafts for use in daily life; using mediums like punch needling and working with beads. I have a small Instagram business (@louloldesigns on Instagram) where I sell my crafting. Selling my crafting allows me to work on transferrable skills for product design; camera work and stall layout sales skills. Product Design means a lot to me; I look forward to being in industry.

Shake Shelter

Shake Shelter is an anxiety release aid for dogs after adoption from shelter. Its users are adopted dogs & their owners. Product aids by helping adopted dogs learn natural canine stress reduction technique; involves the dog oscillating full body from side to side. Technique is shaking movement commonly utilised by non-shelter adopted dogs in reducing stress levels. Dogs start using Shake Shelter at the time of adoption, continuing to wear Shake Shelter throughout their life or until their owner feels they are no longer anxious and have learnt anxiety release.

Shake Shelter gets its name from the concept of its function in short being 'shaking off the stress built up from shelter life'.Ethics are seen through all fabric of Shake Shelter being ripstop econyl; material made with fair labor practices from nylon waste, infinitely recyclable and costs under ten euro per Shake Shelter. Shake Shelter will be patent pending.
