GradX Product Design

Paul Wakely

I am a product design student with a strong interest in creating practical solutions that improve everyday behaviour through thoughtful physical design. My work focuses on identifying overlooked problems and translating research insights into commercially realistic products with clear user value. I am particularly interested in how simple interventions can create meaningful long term impact. Throughout my studies, I have developed experience in research, concept generation, prototyping, CAD development, manufacturing considerations, and user testing.

I enjoy projects that combine creativity with technical problem solving, especially where design can positively influence habits and decision-making. My final year project reflects this approach by addressing household food waste through a product designed to integrate naturally into daily cooking routines.

PreparationStation

The Preparation Station is a kitchen product designed to reduce avoidable household food waste by improving portion decisions during meal preparation. Research showed that many people rely on estimation when cooking, often leading to over preparation and unnecessary waste. Existing measuring tools are frequently ignored because they interrupt workflow or add effort. In response, the Preparation Station integrates portion guidance directly into a multifunctional chopping and preparation system. The product combines a main food preparation surface with removable containers for ingredients, waste, and organised cooking tasks.

By embedding portion control into an activity users already perform, the design encourages better decisions without requiring extra motivation or behaviour change. Developed through iterative prototyping, user testing, and technical refinement, the final concept demonstrates how behaviour led product design can address sustainability challenges through simple, intuitive everyday interaction.
