Hi, I'm Eve Zewdu and I’m a graduating Visual Communications student. My work encompasses a variety of mediums, but I'm particularly drawn towards animation, illustration and combined materials.

Hidden Heroines

Most critiques around traditional fairytales tend to be about two things: whether they're regressive and disempowering for girls, or how the original stories were much darker than modern retellings. In the case of the former, most people don't seem to realise that the demure damsels-in-distress weren't the only types of princesses or heroines that existed back then. Some were more flawed while others were just as heroic as their male counterparts. The problem is that a lot of the shorter illustrated collections or adaptations children grow up with have ignored these unconventional maidens in favour of the more well-known heroines like Snow White and Rapunzel who fit the passive mould. With this publication I aim to shed light on these lesser-known princesses and heroines in Grimms Fairytales.
