Keely Fitzgerald

Hi I’m Keely, a designer with experience across a wide range of areas including editorial design, branding, image-making, and visual storytelling. My work is driven by curiosity and a strong eye for detail, with a focus on developing concepts that communicate clearly and leave a lasting impression. I’m particularly drawn to projects that combine narrative with strong visual systems, using design to shape atmosphere and meaning in a thoughtful and intentional way. I always try to consider a range of perspectives and lived experiences throughout my process in order to create outcomes that feel accessible, considered, and inclusive to different audiences. Whether working in print or digital formats, I aim to create work that feels visually compelling and conceptually grounded.

Beyond the Map: Where Place Begins

This project challenges conventional mapping systems and their ability to communicate a true sense of place. Traditional maps are often designed for navigation and accuracy. As a result they can overlook the smaller details and layered experiences that shape how a place is understood. This project explores how mapping can become a more interpretive form of visual communication rather than simply a tool for direction.
Using the small rural village of Rathoe in Co. Carlow as a site, the project communicates how environments can be understood through a series of layered mapping systems, archival content, and personal experiences. The layers and recorded forms of mapping that together build a broader understanding of the area. The outcome encourages audiences to reconsider the potential maps have to communicate a deeper sense of place and identity through design.

Empowerment Over Power

This publication is based on the teachings of the Powercube framework by John Gaventa. The project explores the different expressions of power including power over, power to, power with, and power within. It questions how ideas of power are often portrayed within modern society through competition, control, status, and influence over others. Through both contemporary and historical examples, the publication highlights how these forms of “power over” can encourage manipulation and inequality, while also challenging audiences to reconsider how power should be understood and practiced.
In response to this, the project promotes empowerment over dominance by encouraging collaboration, self-belief, collective action, and positive change. The publication uses typography, image, and layered visual systems to communicate these ideas in an engaging and reflective way. When physically interacted with, the format unfolds and restructures into the shape of a cube, directly referencing the structure of the Powercube itself.
