Annie McCarrick
The 1990s were a chilling time in Ireland in relation to female disappearances. The province of Leinster in the Republic of Ireland became and area where female disappearances became so common it was dubbed the ‘Vanishing Triangle.’ This publication tells the story of Annie McCarrick, a 26 year old American woman who went missing in Ireland on the 26th of March 1993. Annie had moved to Ireland and was completing her studies to become a teacher in St Patrick’s College in Dublin. It is believed that on the 26th of March 1993 Annie went for a walk in Enniskerry and has never returned. There has been many theories as to what happened Annie however to this day she has still never been found.
When a person vanishes their photo is repeatedly reproduced in the media and on missing persons posters. This publication uses the crude photocopying reproduction process as a metaphor for Annie's fading story within people’s minds twenty-five years after her disappearance.
The publication is in a newspaper tabloid format in order to represent where Annie's story had been told before. The typographic hierarchy, imagery and paper stock reflect the style of a tabloid newspaper. The neon cover of the publication is in reference to a red top newspaper further depicting where her story has been told before. The ephemeral tabloid newspaper article contrasts with this publication which aims to keep her story alive.
