Bánu Tuaithe
The primary aim of this project is to showcase the cultural erosion and bánú tuaithe happening in the Gaeltacht regions of Ireland. Being from the Gaeltacht is a major part of my identity. It’s an identity that can travel far and wide, and I know if I can find someone to speak Irish to, I will feel at home. Currently, the Gaeltacht is struggling for survival, with post offices being closed, older generations being lost, and with them we’re losing an indigenous way of life and their traditions. This process is called bánú tuaithe, or ‘rural decline’ in English. However, as with many phrases, the translation doesn’t accurately portray the true meaning of bánú tuaithe. Bánú literally means ‘whitening’ or whitewashing. It brings connotations of desertion, depopulation and the loss of a way of life.
