Dublin Library and Cultural Hub
The aim of this project was to redesign the iconic Central Bank building, located in Dublin’s Temple Bar, into a public library and cultural hub. This mixed-use development will re-establish the building as a landmark destination for Dublin, providing a space that visitors of all ages can visit and explore.
Having completed extensive research on the building itself and its surroundings, I decided to link my concept to the natural pattern that was exhibited in the map of Temple Bar. What stood out to me was the curves and flow of the River Liffey through the structure of Dublin and the flow of the public around the Central Bank building. I decided to play with the idea of flow vs structure as a concept and the journey that the public take around the building. This led to the design of large open voids on each side of the building and the connecting of different spaces
and levels.
One of the key design objectives was to enhance the open nature of the plaza, the most significant change was the lowering of the entrance level and the sunken landscaped courtyard in the centre of the plaza.The building's amenities include exhibition spaces for local artists to display their work, a small theatre for various lectures and performances to be held in, a large ground floor café, a library with study and quiet areas, a children’s library and a rooftop restaurant.
The materials and colour palette I chose for the building is quite neutral, with a pop of orange used throughout to enhance certain design features.
