The Creative District
The aim of this project was to redesign The Elgee Building located in Dundalk into a co-working space for designers to share, whether they are still in college or working in the industry. The Creative District would be a transparent facility where designers from different disciplines could connect and learn from the like-minded people, create and share their ideas under one roof.
The challenge for this project was to combine the chosen building with its use through interior design. To do so I have focused on the exterior elements of the Elgee building for my concept and implemented them into the interior space by using clever spatial layout, structures and sustainable materials. A colourful yet calm colour scheme was chosen to create sleek interiors with a strong hint of quirkiness to boost the existing creativity aesthetically.
The Creative District consists of a large range of facilities that include spacious open plan studios, well-equipped workshops, private meeting rooms, library, canteen, presentation area and the retail space for designer products. The public would also be welcome to use a selection of the facilities in the building such as the retail space, café, exhibition area and the occasional use of workshops in order to learn more about design and its importance, which could possibly inspire the future generations.
