Oma
Oma is an interactive recording device aimed to connect loved ones through the sharing of advice and stories. With correspondence between people becoming easier, letters, postcards, and more permanent ways of communicating are becoming more of a novelty. Made up of a recording device and pendants that are used to store these audio files, families, and friends can record special memories that can then be passed on as heirlooms. These pendants can then be worn as jewellery or gifted to somebody else to listen to and wear. Storytelling is such a huge part of Irish culture, and in this project, I aimed to capture those stories for people to share and listen to. The value that the user can put into the product grows when it is used and played with. Inspired by my own Oma, the project encourages the user to record things like recipes, life advice, or memories. Things that they deem valuable enough to pass on to somebody else. Oma aims to enhance experiences between generations through a tangible object that holds value beyond its materials. These objects hold something that is unique to each user – being able to capture a person’s voice, experiences and way of speaking in a meaningful way, forever.
