EnvoLoop
Plastic is a material which is designed to last for hundreds of years while the function of plastic packaging is only required for a number of days. In 2019, 412,000,000 plastic mailer bags are expected to be shipped in the UK, almost none of which will be recycled due to the materials and adhesives they are made of.
EnvoLoop is a reusable packaging product & service which aims to eliminate single-use plastic packaging from the online retail industry. Used for transporting clothing and other non-fragile products, the EnvoLoop bags are made from water and tear-resistant material Tyvek, making the bags durable and long-lasting. Orders would be sent out in these bags and then returned to the retailers to be used again and again. Users could return the bags by leaving them in a local collection point, receiving money back or discounts once they have done so. By creating a cycle of reusable mailer bags, online retailers such as ASOS and Amazon can greatly reduce their environmental impact and avoid incoming taxes or bans on current packaging materials.
Another important aspect of this project is how persuasive messaging and branding can encourage more environmentally-friendly behaviours. EnvoLoop attempts to do this by creating a brand identity which uses witty and relatable phrases to establish a connection with the user. These can primarily be seen printed directly onto the bags in an effort to improve the reusability of packaging.
