SIDIUM
The aim of this project was to create a device, with player safety at the core of its principles, which would eradicate the doubt of pitch-side judgement calls in relation to concussion in sport. Too often are serious injuries, such as concussion, becoming neglected across all sports and ages globally. SIDIUM offers an affordable and reliable solution for all teams and clubs, whilst guaranteeing peace of mind and safety for these players.
The Pupillary Light Reflex (PLR) response has been proven to be up 70% slower in those with concussion symptoms and in some cases completely diminished. The device, activated and operated from an accompanying smartphone app, triggers a PLR response in the players eye through a light stimulus, from which it records and processes the rate of change of the pupil inside a 5 second time frame. The results are then compared to previously recorded healthy results of the same player to indicate whether there is a presence of concussion. Should concussion be present, the player will cease playing immediately and be advised to seek further medical attention from a designated professional.
The device features programmed pupil-recognition technology, enclosed in a sleek, aesthetic, adjustable housing visor. The visor accompanies a tested comfortable, secure headset unit to eradicate any doubts of inaccurate results or potential intrusive issues.
SIDIUM is primarily produced from fully recyclable ABS plastic, whilst also possessing the strength and durability to cope with the outdoor environments in which it will primarily be in operation.
